Home/Making

The Canada Council Art Bank’s collection of over 17,000 works brings together a diversity of media and subject matter—including many outstanding works that explore the things we see and do on a daily basis in our very own homes. Home/Making draws attention to the creative work that takes place at home, and the ways the home can inspire art. These artworks transform familiar materials such as kitchenware, furniture, hand tools, and appliances into unexpected forms. They also draw inspiration from domestic activities such as parenting, cooking, mending, and cleaning, to show them in a new light. By re-imagining familiar spaces and objects in unexpected ways, artworks like these allow us to rethink the creative possibilities of items we might otherwise overlook, or of work that might otherwise go unnoticed.
